Takara Tomy is the Japanese toy manufacturer formed on March 1, 2006, through the merger of Tomy (founded in 1924 as Tomiyama Toy Seisakusho) and Takara (founded in 1955). The company’s corporate logo is used primarily in Japan and Asia, while international subsidiaries operate under the Tomy name with a separate mark.
Design and History
The current Takara Tomy logo was introduced ahead of the March 2006 merger. According to the company’s business report, the new corporate identity (CI) inherited and combined the existing corporate logos of both predecessor companies, showing respect for each company’s history. The corporate color was chosen to evoke the “blue of the vast sky” (大空の「蒼」), reflecting the company’s desire to give dreams and hope to people around the world.[1]
The mark consists of the word “TAKARA” above the word “TOMY,” both in white capital letters, set on a dark blue background in the shape of a rectangle with rounded corners. Dark blue and white are claimed as features of the mark in the company’s U.S. trademark registration.[2] The trademark registration lists a first use date of March 1, 2007.[3]
In February 2024, to mark the company’s 100th anniversary, Takara Tomy released a special commemorative logo. The design depicts the creation of infinite possibilities (“∞”) from “1,” connecting the company’s “origin” with the “future,” Japan with the world, and people with one another. The company states the logo embodies its spirit of ASOBI (play) and commitment to product quality that has existed since its founding.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The company’s official business report explains that the corporate color of the merged company was inspired by the “blue of the vast sky,” chosen to express the aspiration to be a presence that gives dreams and hope to all people around the world.[1] The 100th anniversary logo’s “1” to “∞” motif symbolizes the creation of infinite possibilities and a limitless future, while also representing the company’s ongoing commitment to play and product quality.[4]
