Amerigroup is a managed care health insurance brand that historically served Medicaid, Medicare and CHIP enrollees. It operated as a subsidiary of Anthem, later renamed Elevance Health, before most of its state plans were rebranded as Wellpoint beginning in 2024. The Amerigroup name and identity remain in use in some markets, including Georgia and Washington, D.C.[1]
Design and History
Amerigroup’s visual identity underwent a documented change in 2010. According to a report in The Virginian-Pilot, the company revamped its logo and website after finding its existing look outdated. The previous red-and-blue typeface was replaced with the Amerigroup name rendered in blue and green letters, paired with the tagline “Real Solutions.” John E. Littel, then executive vice president of external relations, said, “We found that our colors and logo seemed a bit stale.”[2]
In July 2023, Elevance Health announced that its Amerigroup subsidiary would begin rebranding as Wellpoint in January 2024. The change was described as reflecting “the company’s evolution to support whole health.” The rebrand initially applied to plans in Arizona, Iowa, New Jersey, Tennessee, Texas and Washington, following regulatory approval. Amerigroup plans in Maryland had already adopted the Wellpoint name earlier that year.[3] The Amerigroup brand remained in Washington, D.C. and Georgia.[1]
Elevance Health said the Wellpoint name was chosen to better align the government insurance business with its whole-health strategy and to simplify its portfolio of health plan brands.[4] Felicia Norwood, president of government health benefits for Elevance Health, said the Wellpoint moniker was “more reflective of who we are today” than the Amerigroup name.[4]
As of 2025, Amerigroup’s Medicare plans are presented under the Wellpoint name, with the company stating there would be no impact on coverage or provider access as a result of the change.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2010 redesign introduced the “Real Solutions” tagline alongside the blue and green wordmark, but no official source from that period describes the meaning of the colors or any symbolic mark.[2]
For the Wellpoint rebrand, Elevance Health stated the new name was intended to convey that the plan would support members “at any stage of life” and assist with whole-person health challenges, including mental and behavioral health needs and socioeconomic factors affecting well-being.[4]
Typography and Design
The 2010 report confirms only that the name appeared in blue and green letters with the words “Real Solutions,” replacing an earlier red-and-blue typeface.[2]
