Oura, the Finnish company behind the Oura Ring smart wearable, is known for a minimalist visual identity that mirrors the clean design of its product. The brand was developed in late 2014 when the startup, then working under the prototype name “The Ring,” approached the London-based branding and strategy agency Proxy to help position the product in a competitive wearable market.[1]
Design and History
Proxy and the Oura team developed a premium brand focused on wellness and holistic wellbeing, working together to create a name that would deliver on that positioning. To stand out against fast, sporty names like Fitbit and Misfit, they created a soothing name consisting of vowels and a soft consonant.[1] Finnish designer Aapo Bovellan, working through his investment company, is credited as the creator of the Oura brand, having designed the company’s logo, visual language and packaging.[2]
The original identity included packaging design. Proxy worked with the Oura operations team to design the first packaging, developing a cube-shaped format with premium finishes of foil stamping, sharp edges and gloss varnish to reflect the brand positioning.[3]
Oura has continued to refine its brand presence. When Doug Sweeny joined as chief marketing officer in 2022, he noted the brand did not have a clear, long-term identity and set out to answer fundamental questions about the brand’s direction.[4] More recently, the digital design agency Instrument has partnered with Oura on brand experiences, including work on the Oura app that built on the existing brand to create a new visual language for the product experience.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Oura name itself carries documented meaning. Proxy created a name that nods to holistic wellbeing and begins with the letter “O,” creating a connection to the physical shape of the product, the ring.[1]
Oura has also registered a standalone symbol with the USPTO. The mark consists of the stylized letter “O” shaped like a ring with a short horizontal line appearing above it, filed by Oura Health Oy in March 2024.[6] A separate logo trademark was registered by Oura Health Oy in November 2025.[7]
Typography and Design
Proxy’s description of the original identity notes that the typography is “quiet and reductive, projecting a feeling of simplicity and calm,” consistent with the premium wellness positioning developed for the brand.[8] Oura maintains official brand guidelines and a brand asset page, and requires commercial users to follow its specifications for font, size, colors and typeface.[9]
