Medtronic is a global healthcare technology company headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, with operational headquarters in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Its visual identity pairs a typographic wordmark with a distinctive symbol that has roots in a painting commissioned by co-founder Earl Bakken. The current mark reflects two significant brand refreshes, one in 2016 and another in 2021.
Design and History
In January 2016, Medtronic unveiled a new brand to mark the first anniversary of its integration with Covidien. The new logo was built on the Effra typeface, described at the time as more modern and softer in feel, and was accompanied by the tagline “Further, Together.” The tagline was intended to express the company’s management philosophy of new thinking, continuous innovation, success with customers, and collaboration with stakeholders.[1]
In October 2021, Medtronic announced another brand refresh, powered by what it called its “bold ambition” to become the global leader in healthcare technology. The refresh introduced a new tagline, “Engineering the extraordinary,” and included an update to the Medtronic Symbol.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Medtronic Symbol has a documented origin. According to the company, the symbol’s design was originally inspired by a painting that co-founder Earl Bakken commissioned. The symbol has changed only a few times since the company was founded more than 60 years ago.[2]
The 2021 update to the symbol shows a gender-neutral person in a high-tech color scheme moving forward toward full life.[2] This visual concept traces back to Bakken’s own description of “the rising man” coming off the operating table and walking away to full life, a phrase he used in the 1970s when he had an artist render the image.[3]
Typography and Design
The 2016 Medtronic wordmark was based on the Effra typeface, a choice reported across multiple trade publications covering the brand announcement. The typeface was selected to give the logo a more modern and softer appearance.[1][4]
Medtronic’s brand color system includes a deep blue and an electric blue. According to brand color references drawn from Medtronic materials, the primary palette includes a dark blue with the hex value #140F4B (Pantone 2766 C) and an electric blue with the hex value #1010EB (Pantone 286 C), alongside white and atmospheric white.[5]
Medtronic’s brand center indicates the visual identity has continued to evolve, with the company introducing “expressive new gradients” and refreshed photo styling as part of its ongoing brand system.[6]
