Sutter Health is a not-for-profit healthcare system headquartered in Sacramento, California, serving patients across Northern California. The organization unveiled its current logo in January 2024 as part of a comprehensive brand relaunch led by the brand experience company Monigle.[1][2]
Design and History
Sutter Health traces its roots to 1921, when the Sutter Hospital Association was incorporated in response to the 1918 flu pandemic. Named for nearby Sutter’s Fort, the first Sutter Hospital opened in Sacramento two years later.[3]
The organization’s previous logo, registered as a trademark in 2013, was described as an “S”-shaped ribbon in grey and white lines, diagonally bisecting a plus sign or addition symbol in which the lower left half is solid grey and the upper right half is teal green. The trademark filing claimed grey, white and teal green as features of the mark.[4]
In January 2024, Sutter Health unveiled a new logo as part of a broader rebrand that included a new mission and brand promise. Monigle, an independent brand experience company, announced the launch of the new brand in February 2024, describing it as reflecting “Sutter Health’s renewed energy and commitment to making Healthcare better.”[2][1]
The rebrand was led by Jennifer Bollinger, Sutter Health’s senior vice president and chief consumer and brand officer, who described the relaunch as “an opportunity to tell a story about the depth and breadth of Sutter Health’s capabilities today and our bold ambitions for the future.”[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to Monigle, the change in the direction of the energy lines in the new logo is “a symbol of Sutter Health’s upward momentum and path forward.” The rebrand was designed to signal Sutter Health’s commitment to positively impacting more lives.[2]
The brand overhaul was rooted in a vision “to become the most comprehensive, integrated, and connected health system for getting and staying well,” with the new identity reflecting Sutter Health’s momentum and confidence while staying true to its history and reputation.[2]
Typography and Design
Monigle described the new brand expression as “nimble, real and relentless,” part of a comprehensive approach that included brand architecture simplification across the system to emphasize “ONE Sutter Health.”[2] The changes were expected to gradually unfold across California beginning in early 2024.[2]
