Allstate is an American personal lines insurer headquartered in Northbrook, Illinois, founded in 1931 as part of Sears, Roebuck and Co. and later spun off as an independent company. The company’s visual identity centers on the Good Hands Beacon, a symbol that has been a hallmark of Allstate advertising since 1950 and has evolved over more than seven decades into the mark used today. [1]

Design and History

The Good Hands Beacon and the slogan “You’re in good hands” have been central to Allstate’s advertising since 1950. The first advertisements using these elements appeared in the September 23, 1950 issues of The Saturday Evening Post and Collier’s. [2] The slogan itself originated from a personal moment: a general sales manager rushed home in 1950 after learning his daughter was ill, and his wife comforted him by noting the girl was “in good hands” with the doctor. He recalled the incident at a sales meeting, and “You’re in good hands with Allstate” was born. [3]

Allstate’s original hands logo was designed by Theodore Conterio in the 1950s. The company held an employee contest offering a $50 prize for the best logo design, and Conterio won with a design based on the slogan “You’re in good hands.” [4]

In November 2006, the identity was redesigned by the branding firm Siegel+Gale, which set the wordmark in a modified cut of Whitney SemiBold and gave the oval border a heavier stroke. [5]

A subsequent refresh in 2017 reworked the logo visuals to encompass a more decorated and deeper presence. The new identity retained the centrality of the blue palette, with the company slogan now sitting below in turquoise. The blue hands were inverted, departing from the blue and white of old to a more detailed logo accented by white lines. [6] The 2017 refresh also relocated the emblem to the left of the wordmark and introduced a bolder oval. [5]

Meaning and Symbolism

The Good Hands Beacon directly visualizes the company’s long-standing slogan “You’re in good hands,” which has been a hallmark of Allstate’s advertising since 1950. [1] The original hands logo was designed based on this slogan, making the symbol a literal representation of the brand’s core promise. [4]

Typography and Design

Allstate’s principal typography has remained closely tied to its formative design, using a humanist sans serif with a distinctively slanted “A” across several historic logo designs. The 2017 alterations held on to the wordmark’s structure while offering a bubblier effect, widening both the lowercase “t’s” and altering the lowercase “a” considerably. [6] The 2006 Siegel+Gale redesign set the wordmark in a modified cut of Whitney SemiBold. [5]
