Chubb is a global property and casualty insurance company, formed in January 2016 when ACE Limited completed its acquisition of The Chubb Corporation and adopted the Chubb name for the combined entity.[1] The current Chubb logo is a custom-drawn wordmark with no accompanying symbol, available in black for light backgrounds and reversed out of black for dark backgrounds.[2]
Design and History
Following the ACE-Chubb merger, the new company commissioned the design firm COLLINS to create a unified brand identity. COLLINS developed a brand platform around the theme “Certainty through craft,” reflecting shared values of both companies, and designed a new comprehensive Chubb brand language.[3]
The new logo was unveiled in January 2016. Evan Greenberg, chairman and CEO of the combined company, described it as “a simple expression of our name, with no extra symbols or visual distractions” and “a simple, refined, modern expression of Chubb.”[1][4] The design deliberately avoided symbols, with Greenberg explaining that the Chubb name itself “is a symbol of quality and strength.”[1]
The previous Chubb logo, used by The Chubb Corporation before the merger, featured a geometric emblem consisting of a white circle placed inside a dark blue rectangle, paired with an austere, heavy sans-serif wordmark.[5] That earlier identity has been attributed to the design agency Raymond Loewy/William Snaith, Inc.[5] Raymond Loewy’s design work for Chubb is also listed in his career chronology, dated to 1968.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
To balance the simplicity of the new wordmark, the Chubb brand uses nine colors across its identity. Greenberg stated that these colors “reflect the diversity and energy of our culture, our thinking, global presence, the many different customers we serve and the many products we offer.”[1] COLLINS similarly described the choice of “a variety of changing, vibrant colors” as symbolic of “the ever-evolving business of insurance as well as the diversity of Chubb’s offerings.”[3]
The brand is also supported by the signature line “Chubb. Insured.,” described by the company as “a mark of craftsmanship.”[7]
Typography and Design
The Chubb logo is a custom-drawn wordmark, and the company explicitly states that it “should never be re-created, altered or set in a different typeface.”[2] The logo includes a registered trademark symbol positioned in the upper right-hand corner.[2]
