Firefox Send was Mozilla’s encrypted file-sharing service, launched as part of the Firefox product family. Its visual identity was introduced in June 2019 as part of a broader Firefox brand refresh, and the service was permanently shut down in September 2020.
Design and History
Firefox Send’s logo was unveiled on June 11, 2019, when Mozilla presented a new brand system for the entire Firefox family, which by then included the browser, Send, Monitor, and Lockwise. The redesign was driven by the fact that Firefox had expanded beyond a single web browser into a suite of privacy-focused products and services, and Mozilla wanted a unified visual language to cover them all.[1]
The Send mark was one of several “line-based graphics” created for individual Firefox services, alongside Monitor and Lockwise. The whole system was built around the motif of a circular, swooshing fox tail, which served as the umbrella symbol for the Firefox parent brand.[2] The service icons were designed to signal the function each app performs, using simple line drawings that recall what each service does.[3]
The final design work was led by Ramotion Creative Director Michael Chu in collaboration with Firefox.[4] The Firefox Send and Firefox Lockwise logos were already in use at the time of the official brand announcement in June 2019.[5]
Firefox Send was taken offline in July 2020 after Mozilla discovered the service was being abused to ship malware and conduct spear phishing attacks. On September 17, 2020, Mozilla announced it was permanently decommissioning the service.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Unlike the Firefox browser icon, which retained a stylized fox, the Send, Monitor, and Lockwise marks did not include fox references. Instead, they were tied to the overall Firefox brand through their shared color palette.[7] The icons used bright, colorful gradients of orange, yellow, pink, blue, and purple.[3]
Mozilla’s Open Design blog explained that the new icons for Firefox products were meant to signal the functions these apps perform, reinforcing that all Firefox products and services help users keep their personal life private.[8]
Typography and Design
The 2019 Firefox rebrand introduced a new, expanded color palette that made it possible to use gradients, along with a modern and rounded typeface that reflected the logos.[2] The typeface used in the logo system was modernized to be more rounded.[9] German tech publication PC Welt identified the new font as “Firefox Sharp Sans.”[10]
