Google Calendar is a time-management and scheduling service that Google released on April 13, 2006, as a free, web-based calendar allowing users to access, manage, and share appointments and events.[1][2] Over the years, its app icon has undergone several distinct redesigns, moving from a realistic physical calendar to a flat, four-color square, and most recently to a gradient, blue-focused design.
Design and History
Google Calendar’s earliest icon featured a tear-off desk calendar with a blue binding, a design that persisted through the late 2000s.[3] In April 2011, Google updated the browser favicon so that it no longer always displayed “31” but instead changed to reflect the current day of the month.[4]
The most significant visual change came in October 2020, when Google rebranded G Suite as Google Workspace and rolled out new icons for its productivity apps, including Calendar.[5] The new Calendar icon dropped the physical tear-off calendar object it was previously modeled after. It became a square with the bottom-right corner creased, with blue as the primary color and “31” in the center.[6] This redesign brought Calendar in line with Google’s four-color icon family, using the company’s blue, red, yellow, and green palette.[3] The date at the center continued to refresh daily.[7]
In May 2026, Google introduced another major icon refresh across Workspace apps, described by the company as a “fresh visual identity for Google Workspace app icons” designed for the “Gemini Era.”[8] The new Calendar icon shifted back toward a more blue-focused design, moving away from the four-color square frame and returning to a page-turning calendar motif.[9][10] The rollout began on the web on May 18, 2026, reached iOS by May 26, and completed on Android by June 4, 2026.[11]
Meaning and Symbolism
Google stated that the 2026 redesign was intended to “give every app a more distinct identity” and keep each application “recognizable on your screen.”[8] Unlike the 2020 icon set, which required each app to use all four Google colors, the 2026 icons dropped that mandate for most apps, with Gmail being the only exception.[8] The new icons also feature gradients rather than the flat, solid color blocks of the previous generation.[9]
Google also noted that Calendar, Meet, and Chat were no longer “extremely boxy” in the 2026 update, a departure from the rigid square containers used in the 2020 icon set.[8]
Typography and Design
The 2020 Calendar icon was a flat square with a creased bottom-right corner, using blue as the dominant color with the number “31” centered in the icon.[6] The icon was part of a broader Workspace family that shared the four Google colors of blue, red, yellow, and green.[3]
The 2026 redesign introduced gradient color treatments across the Workspace suite, with the Calendar icon returning to a predominantly blue palette and a page-turning calendar shape.[9][10] Google emphasized that these design updates did not alter any core functionality or administrative controls.[8]
