Rambler (Рамблер) is one of Russia’s oldest internet portals, launched in 1996 as a search engine and later evolving into a media and service-aggregator platform. The portal’s current visual identity, introduced in April 2016, centers on a typographic wordmark incorporating a forward slash, a symbol drawn directly from internet URL syntax.
Design and History
Rambler.ru presented a new version of its logo on April 5, 2016, featuring an updated wordmark and the addition of a slash symbol (“/”).[1] The redesign changed the lettering, the color, and introduced the slash as a new brand element.[2] The work was carried out by the Russian design studio ONY.[2]
The previous logo, featuring a compass symbol, had been introduced in 2011.[3] The 2016 update followed a period of product expansion for the portal, including new versions of News, Finance, Video, and Mail services, as well as new offerings in Real Estate and Travel. According to Marina Rossinskaya, then director of products at Rambler&Co and head of Rambler.ru, these changes led to the idea of creating a simple and concise logo that would fully reflect the essence of the updated portal.[4]
ONY’s case study for the project describes Rambler.ru as one of Russia’s largest search engines that had undergone a global repositioning toward a media and service-aggregator model. The studio proposed using the slash sign, known to any internet user, as an element of the new logo.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The slash is one of the basic elements of an internet address. According to Rambler&Co’s press service, it works as a symbol of nesting, denoting the strategy of Rambler.ru as a unified portal whose services can provide solutions to any questions. The slash is also closely associated with technology, emphasizing the brand’s role as one that stood at the origins of the Russian internet.[4]
Vladislav Klyuev, then art director of Rambler.ru, explained that the team needed a symbol that would reflect the portal’s development vector, show the brand’s long history, and be flexible and utilitarian, capable of being expanded into various concepts for user communication. He noted that the slash was chosen together with ONY.[4]
ONY’s own description adds that the slash symbolizes the embedding of content and services, positioning Rambler as a space where users can find answers to all their questions.[5] Maxim Orlov, art director at ONY, noted that the slash serves as a signature device for Rambler, helping with sub-brands, the creation of branded icons, and the diagonal division of surfaces on advertising materials.[6]
Typography and Design
The 2016 logo update introduced a new letterform for the Rambler wordmark.[2] While ONY selected the Google font Roboto for use in the portal’s interface, the logo itself uses a different typeface, as confirmed by Maxim Orlov in an interview.[6]
ONY described the slash as a simple and archetypal symbol that allowed the studio to express the uniqueness of the Rambler brand.[5] Orlov explained that the studio’s philosophy favors minimalism and simple forms, noting that the simpler the form, the more opportunities exist to play with it in different contexts.[6]
