Google Docs is the word processing application within Google’s Workspace productivity suite. Its current app icon is a blue document page with white horizontal lines, a design introduced in October 2020 when Google rebranded its G Suite offering as Google Workspace and rolled out new four-color icons across its productivity apps.[1]
Design and History
Google announced the Workspace rebrand on October 6, 2020, stating that users would see new four-color icons for Gmail, Drive, Calendar, Meet, and collaborative content creation tools like Docs, Sheets, and Slides in the coming weeks.[1] The new icons were designed to resemble the same family and represent Google Workspace’s commitment to building integrated communication and collaboration experiences.[1]
Javier Soltero, then VP and GM of Google Workspace, introduced the concept in a Google Cloud blog post, explaining that while the products were originally created as individual apps solving distinct challenges, they had become more integrated over time.[2] The new Docs icon was described as essentially Drive’s icon but as a rectangle with a creased top-right corner, reflecting the relationship between the two services.[1]
Prior to the 2020 update, Google Docs used a similar blue document icon with four white horizontal lines and a folded upper-right corner, a design that had been in place since roughly 2014. That version refined an earlier 2012 design by rounding the rectangle’s corners further and repositioning the text stripes toward the bottom of the page.[3] The 2020 version simplified the icon further, replacing the four white lines with three and changing the folded corner’s shape.[3]
In May 2026, Google introduced another refresh of its Workspace app icons. The company described it as a “fresh visual identity” that gives every app a more distinct identity. Docs, along with Sheets, Slides, Keep, Forms, Sites, and Vids, no longer uses a piece of paper as its background container.[4] Google stated these changes drive consistency and cohesion across the product suite while keeping each application recognizable.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Google Docs icon uses a document page shape with horizontal lines to represent text, making the word processing function immediately identifiable. The blue color distinguishes Docs from the green Sheets icon and the yellow Slides icon within the Workspace family.[5] The 2020 Workspace icons adopted the four Google brand colors of blue, red, yellow, and green across the suite.[1]
