Google Voice is Google’s telephony service, offering a phone number that forwards calls, voicemail transcription, and messaging. The service originated from GrandCentral, which Google acquired in July 2007 and relaunched as Google Voice on March 11, 2009. [1] [2] Its visual identity has evolved through several distinct icon generations, each tied to a broader Google product or design shift.
Design and History
Google Voice’s icon has undergone at least four documented redesigns since the service launched. The earliest versions used a light blue and white logo. [3]
In January 2017, Google released the first major update to Voice in years, redesigning the mobile and web apps around Material Design. The update introduced a new interface with tabs for messages, calls, and voicemails, and on Android, version 5.0 shipped with a rounded icon for Pixel devices. [4] [5]
In August 2018, at Cloud Next 2018, Google announced that Voice was now part of G Suite and showed off a redesigned app. The new icon replaced the previous light blue and white logo with a dark green design reminiscent of the old Hangouts Dialer. The dark green background matched the shade used by Hangouts Chat and Meet, and that accent color appeared throughout the application. [3]
In November 2020, Google rolled out another new icon for Voice. This version used a more vivid green shade, removed the old apostrophe-like background, and slightly adjusted the phone’s shape and lines with overlapping areas providing a darker green for contrast. A signal-like icon was added in the top right corner with a similar two-tone look. [6] Unlike many other Google product icons of that era, the Voice icon did not include the typical green, blue, red, yellow color combination, instead using varying shades of just green. [7]
In May 2026, Google introduced a fresh visual identity for Google Workspace app icons, including Voice. The redesign dropped the previous mandate that nearly every icon carry all four Google brand colors, replacing it with dominant single colors, soft gradients, and rounder geometry. [8] Google Voice retained its core shape but adopted softer, more rounded edges. [9] The new icons rolled out across the web, iOS, and Android over the following weeks. [10]
Meaning and Symbolism
Google has not published an official explanation of the Voice icon’s symbolism. The 2020 redesign removed the bubble background and added a signal-like icon beside the phone handset, a visual that suggests audio or voice transmission. [6] The 2026 Workspace redesign was described by Google as giving “every app a more distinct identity” that remains “recognizable on your screen,” with the changes driving “consistency and cohesion across our product suite.” [8]
Typography and Design
Google Voice does not use a standalone wordmark in its app icon. The icon consists of a phone handset symbol, and since 2020, a signal-like mark in the upper right corner. [6] The 2026 version keeps the same core shape with more rounded proportions. [9] Google has not publicly attributed the Voice icon to a specific external designer or agency; the icon updates have been part of Google’s internal product design efforts.
