Elasticsearch is a distributed, open-source search and analytics engine built on the Apache Lucene library. The product is developed by Elastic N.V., a company founded in 2012 and headquartered in Mountain View, California, with its Dutch legal entity elasticsearch B.V. registered in Amsterdam.[1][2] The Elasticsearch mark is part of a broader family of product logos unified under the Elastic brand, whose main corporate logo is internally referred to as the “cluster.”[3]
Design and History
Elasticsearch’s visual identity underwent a significant change in February 2016, when the company announced new unified product logos at its Elastic{ON} 16 conference in San Francisco.[4] Prior to this, the logos for Elasticsearch, Kibana, Logstash, and Beats were visually inconsistent, using different styles, color counts, and design approaches across the product line.[3] The 2016 update introduced a shared design language for all Elastic products, coinciding with the rebranding of the “ELK Stack” to the “Elastic Stack” and the unification of version numbers across the ecosystem.[5]
The current Elasticsearch logo, as registered in trademark filings, consists of convex shapes in the form of a cluster with the word “ELASTIC” to the right.[1] The trademark application for the broader Elastic mark describes convex shapes in pink, yellow, blue, aqua blue, green, and lime green forming a cluster, with the word “ELASTIC” in black and a vertical line separating it from additional text.[6]
In 2019, Elastic’s design team published a detailed account of an iterative redesign of its product logos and icons. The team, led by visual designer Jess (who joined Elastic through the Swiftype acquisition), noted that the original product logos were “well-thought-out conceptually” but had become inconsistent as the company grew rapidly through acquisitions and new product development.[3] The redesign aimed to create a scalable design system rather than a one-time aesthetic facelift.
Meaning and Symbolism
Elastic’s design team has documented the conceptual basis for its logo system. The main brand mark is called the “cluster,” a name that reflects the distributed, node-based architecture of Elasticsearch itself, where a cluster consists of one or more nodes working together.[3] The design rules established for product logos state that inspiration comes from data visualizations, with two simple geometric shapes overlapping to reference a third, using two color main shapes plus a dark cool gray overlap.[3]
The design team also documented a color adjustment during the 2019 refresh: the original Elastic blue and Elastic teal were described as clashing, so the blue was shifted and a reddish tone was added to the palette.[3]
Typography and Design
Elastic’s design system distinguishes between logos and icons. Logos are described as abstract marks that rely on repetition and visual prominence, while icons are functional marks that show specific functionality within the user interface.[3] The cluster logo is used as the primary brand mark, and internal brand guidelines specify that it should always include a white outline in certain applications.[7]
The trademark registration for the Elastic mark describes the word “ELASTIC” appearing in black to the right of the cluster of convex shapes, with a vertical line separating additional text elements.[6] Elastic’s trademark guidelines restrict use of the Elasticsearch and Elastic word marks and logo designs to authorized resellers, distributors, and licensees.[8]
