InMobi is an Indian mobile advertising and marketing technology company founded in 2007 as mKhoj, an SMS-based search business in Mumbai, before pivoting to mobile advertising and renaming itself InMobi in 2009. [1] The company’s current visual identity dates to a January 2012 rebrand developed with the Palo Alto, California design firm 1185Design. [2]
Design and History
InMobi’s original brand identity was created in 2009, the same year the company renamed itself from mKhoj. [2] By early 2012, the company said it had expanded globally, acquired the HTML5 rich media platform Sprout, and grown its ad network to over 77 billion impressions per month. InMobi stated it engaged in the rebranding “to visually demonstrate our successful transition from regional mobile ad network, to true global leader in mobile technology.” [2]
InMobi began working with 1185Design on the new brand identity more than a year before the January 2012 launch. After “countless concepts, design experiments, and revisions,” the company selected the new logo, describing it as the one design that “truly represented the energy and impact of the InMobi mobile ad network.” [2] The rebrand was also covered by Indian startup media, which confirmed 1185Design’s role and the company’s stated rationale. [3]
The current InMobi mark has been described as four arcs in four colors, looping like a closed circuit. [4] The company’s official website continues to use a color logo file hosted on its own CDN, indicating the 2012 mark remains the active identity. [5]
Meaning and Symbolism
InMobi’s own announcement described the logo as symbolizing “the constant delivery of dynamic communications, to variety of consumers, on every mobile platform around the world.” [2] This is the only documented symbolic meaning InMobi has publicly attached to the mark.
Typography and Design
The company’s culture page makes a passing reference to “the ‘O’ in InMobi” as a point of collective identity, but it does not describe the letterform’s design. [1]
