Yandex (Яндекс) is a Russian technology company whose visual identity has evolved through several distinct phases since the late 1990s. The current logo, introduced in March 2021, is a red wordmark accompanied by a new symbol: the Cyrillic letter “Я” inside a red circle. The identity was developed by Yandex’s in-house designers together with type designer Ilya Ruderman, who had previously contributed to the creation of the Yandex Sans typeface.[1]
Design and History
Yandex’s first professional logo was created by Artemy Lebedev for the launch of the search engine on September 23, 1997.[2] The studio continued to produce subsequent versions of the logo through the following decades.
The first official corporate identity from Art. Lebedev Studio dates to 1999.[3] A second version followed in April 2004, when the company updated its logo and added new corporate identity elements.[3]
In August 2008, Art. Lebedev Studio released a third version of the logo. The stated problem was to design a Cyrillic sans-serif logo, and the project was led by type designer Elena Novoselova.[4] This redesign marked a significant shift: the wordmark, previously written as “Яndex” with a Latin suffix, became fully Cyrillic (“Яндекс”). Yandex explained that the word had become part of the Russian language and that the mixed-script form looked strange in Russian text.[2]
A fourth version of the logo was released on October 13, 2010, again by Art. Lebedev Studio with Elena Novoselova as type designer. The studio described the task as creating a logo that could be conjugated, making Yandex the first company in Russia with a logo that declines according to Russian grammar rules both audibly and graphically.[5]
The most recent redesign appeared on March 31, 2021. Yandex’s investor announcement noted that the previous logo had been created almost thirteen years earlier, at a time when the company did not yet deliver groceries, process payments, or build self-driving cars. The new identity was designed to work across diverse surfaces, from smartphone screens to courier bags and taxi vehicles.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2021 identity introduced a new sign: the letter “Я” in a red circle, intended for use across interfaces and in physical contexts such as courier bags.[1] The same announcement described the new identity as reflecting the essence of modern Yandex while reminding users that the company’s services share common technologies and a common origin in search.[1]
The name “Yandex” itself combines the Cyrillic letter “Я” (pronounced “ya”) with “index.” The word was originally coined for the search technology and, as a file name, was naturally written in Latin script as “yandex.” It later became “Яndex,” where the “Я” emphasized knowledge of the Russian language.[2]
Typography and Design
Yandex’s official brand guidelines specify the use of the proprietary typeface YS Text Web for screens and YS Text for print materials. The guidelines state that no other fonts, weights, or modifications may be used in official communications.[6]
The 2021 logo redesign also introduced a new font for the logotypes of Yandex’s services, developed with Ilya Ruderman, who had participated in creating the Yandex Sans typeface.[1] The search bar was also changed so that it no longer repeated the shape of an arrow.[1]
