KIOCL Limited, formerly known as Kudremukh Iron Ore Company Limited, is an Indian public sector enterprise under the Ministry of Steel. The company was formed on 2 April 1976 for mining and beneficiation of low grade iron ore at Kudremukh, Karnataka, and is headquartered in Bengaluru.[1]
Design and History
The KIOCL logo features the head of a horse as its central motif. According to the company’s own history page, Kudremukh in Kannada means the “Face of the Horse,” as one of the peaks in the Sahyadri range is shaped like a chess knight. The company states that it “rightly therefore” used the face of a horse as its logo.[2]
The horse head symbol is directly tied to the company’s original name and geographic origin. The Kudremukh mountain range, where the company began operations, resembles the shape of a horse’s face, and the logo visually references this landmark.[2]
In April 2025, during the company’s Golden Jubilee celebration marking 50 years, a dedicated Golden Jubilee company logo was unveiled by the Chairman and Managing Director at an event in Mangalore.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The horse head in the KIOCL logo represents the geographical shape of the Kudremukh location, where the company’s original mining operations were based. The name “Kudremukh” itself derives from the Kannada phrase meaning “horse face,” and the mountain’s distinctive profile inspired both the company name and its visual identity.[2]
