Nippon Steel Corporation, headquartered in Tokyo, is one of the world’s largest steelmakers. Its current visual identity consists of a corporate mark (社章) combined with an English logotype to form a unified brandmark adopted across the company and its group companies.
Design and History
The current brandmark was established in October 2018, ahead of the company’s name change from Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation (NSSMC) to Nippon Steel Corporation, which took effect on April 1, 2019. The new brandmark was created to unify branding across the entire Nippon Steel Group alongside the corporate name changes of group companies.[1]
The brandmark combines the existing NSSMC corporate mark with the new English corporate name, “Nippon Steel.”[1] The corporate mark itself dates to the formation of Nippon Steel & Sumitomo Metal Corporation in 2012, when the logo of the merged company was unveiled on March 30, 2012, prior to the merger taking effect on October 1, 2012.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
According to the company’s official fact book, the triangle at the center of the corporate mark represents a blast furnace and the people who create steel. It reflects the idea that steel, indispensable for civilization, brightens the world. The center point can be viewed as a peak, representing the ambition to be the best steelmaker, or as the destination of a road, representing the unlimited future of steel as a material.[3]
The blue color of the mark represents leading technology and reliability.[3] The Japanese-language version of the fact book specifies that the color scheme is based on cobalt blue and sky blue, which express advancement and reliability.[4]
Typography and Design
The English logotype in the brandmark uses an original font based on a gothic (sans-serif) style. The letterforms are rounded to express both strength and the flexible image of steel.[1][4]
