Craftsy is an online education and subscription video platform focused on craft and hobby instruction, including sewing, quilting, knitting, baking, woodworking and similar creative fields. The brand has undergone two significant ownership changes and one full rebrand since its launch, and its current visual identity reflects a deliberate return to the original name and wordmark.
Design and History
Craftsy launched in 2011 as an online education platform offering craft-oriented video courses. The company was originally operated under the corporate name Sympoz, Inc., which filed the first CRAFTSY trademark application in April 2016. That registration, issued as Registration Number 5210721, describes the mark as “image of the word ‘craftsy’ in cursive,” with no color claimed as a feature of the mark.[1]
In 2017, NBCUniversal acquired Craftsy.[2] In July 2018, the company rebranded its subscription streaming service, Craftsy Unlimited, as Bluprint, a broader lifestyle platform that expanded beyond crafts into cooking, home improvement and wellness.[2] The Craftsy name was fully retired when the platform merged into Bluprint in January 2019.[3]
In July 2020, TN Marketing acquired certain assets of Bluprint and announced it would bring back the Craftsy brand, with a new website launching on or around September 1, 2020.[3] TN Marketing’s CEO and President Cal Franklin communicated directly to customers that the decision to revert to the Craftsy name was a response to customer demand, stating, “You want a return to Craftsy, so let’s bring back the Craftsy brand.”[4] The rebranded Craftsy website relaunched in September 2020.[3]
Following the TN Marketing acquisition, the company filed a new trademark application for CRAFTSY in March 2021, covering downloadable video recordings and mobile applications for craft instruction.[5] A separate trademark registration from October 2017, filed under Sympoz LLC, describes a mark consisting of “the stylized word ‘CRAFTSY'” for downloadable mobile application software.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The original Craftsy wordmark, as documented in the 2016 trademark registration, was rendered in cursive lettering.[1] The cursive style visually connects the brand to the handmade, personal nature of the crafts it teaches, distinguishing it from the more corporate or technical appearance of typical streaming platforms. The current wordmark, as displayed on the Craftsy website, uses a lowercase, rounded letterform in a warm coral-red tone.[7]
Brand asset documentation lists the primary brand color as #F05331, a coral-red shade.[7] The lowercase treatment and rounded letterforms give the wordmark a friendly, approachable character consistent with a brand that serves hobbyists and makers of varying skill levels.
Typography and Design
The current Craftsy website uses Futura Bold for display headings and Source Sans Pro for body text, according to font files served on the site.[8] These are the site’s supporting typefaces rather than the logo lettering itself, which is a custom wordmark. No public documentation identifies a specific designer or agency responsible for the current Craftsy wordmark.
The brand’s visual identity has remained wordmark-focused across its history, with no documented emblem, icon or symbol accompanying the name in official trademark filings.[1][6] The simplicity of the single-color wordmark allows it to function across the platform’s diverse craft categories without competing with instructional imagery.
