Edition Tusch was an Austrian book and art publisher active in Vienna from 1972 until roughly 2000. It operated as a cultural showcase within the printing and publishing group of Anton Tusch, who had founded a large printing company in 1958. The publisher’s graphics studio existed alongside the publishing house itself from 1 April 1972, although some publications appeared under the Edition Tusch name before that date, for instance through the Schroll publishing house.[1]
Design and History
Edition Tusch was formally registered as Edition Tusch Buch- und Kunstverlag GesmbH at Heigerleinstraße 36-40 in Vienna’s 16th district.[2] The publishing program was shaped for over a decade by Kristian Sotriffer, and its publications received multiple awards for their print quality.[1]
The publisher initially concentrated on original graphics and bibliophile portfolios, later expanding into art books.[2] Its output included the series “Österreichische Graphiker der Gegenwart,” which had been running since 1969 under Sotriffer’s editorship.[2]
Near the turn of the millennium, the owner lost interest in the financially unprofitable publishing venture, and the operation was effectively shut down.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
No documented description of a dedicated Edition Tusch logo, signet, or publisher’s device has been located in the available research. The publisher’s identity was instead conveyed through physical marks applied to its graphic editions. Auction records document that Edition Tusch prints carried a blindstamp (Trockenstempel) and, in some cases, an edition label on the reverse of the sheet.[3][4] These marks served as the publisher’s authentication on individual prints rather than as a standalone brand emblem.
Typography and Design
No verifiable information about the typography, colors, or graphic construction of any Edition Tusch logo or imprint has been found in the available sources. The publisher’s reputation rested on the quality of its printed matter, which received multiple awards, rather than on a documented visual identity system.[1]
