Lambertus-Verlag GmbH is a German publishing house based in Freiburg im Breisgau, specializing in social work, social law, and Caritas labor law publications. The company operates as a wholly owned subsidiary of the Deutscher Caritasverband (German Caritas Association).[1]

Design and History

The origins of the Lambertus-Verlag trace back to November 1897, when the “Charitasdruckerei” (Charitas printing house) began operations in Freiburg with four employees and two used printing presses. From 1898, the enterprise was documented as the “Verlag des Charitasverbandes für das katholische Deutschland,” later shortened to “Caritasverlag.”[2]

The name “Lambertus-Verlag” was adopted only after World War II, during structural reorganization of the company. The name, which references Saint Lambertus as one of the patron saints of the city of Freiburg, was not imposed from above but was the result of a competition among employees in 1951.[2]

Documentation of the publisher’s visual identity is limited. The official company history pages do not describe the logo’s design, its creator, or any redesign events. The claim that a logo was created in 1961 by a designer named Peter Lorenz cannot be verified through the publisher’s own materials or through independent design-history sources located during research. Peter Lorenz (born 1933) was a Freiburg-based graphic designer who studied at the Kunstgewerbeschule in Basel and established his own advertising studio in Freiburg, counting the Caritas among his clients.[3] However, no reliable source confirms that he designed a logo for Lambertus-Verlag in 1961.

Meaning and Symbolism

The publisher’s name itself carries documented meaning: it refers to Saint Lambertus, one of the patron saints of Freiburg. The name was chosen through an internal employee competition in 1951, reflecting a connection to the city where the publishing house is based.[2]

Any description of the mark’s visual features or intended meaning would be speculative.
