Fox League is an Australian subscription television channel dedicated to rugby league, owned by Fox Sports Pty Limited and available on Foxtel.[1] The channel launched on 27 February 2017, replacing Fox Sports 2 on channel 502.[2]
Design and History
Fox League was announced in February 2017 as a dedicated 24-hour rugby league channel, with Fox Sports confirming that channel FOX SPORTS 502 would become FOX LEAGUE.[3] The channel was officially launched at Birchgrove Oval in Balmain, described as the spiritual birthplace of rugby league in Australia.[4]
At launch, Head of Fox League Ben Jones confirmed the channel would feature new graphics, new on-screen scoreboard graphics and a new look.[5] The channel’s branding was introduced as part of the broader Fox Sports presentation overhaul that accompanied the dedicated league channel’s debut.
The Fox League identity sits within the wider Fox Sports brand family in Australia, which also includes Fox Footy and Fox Cricket. The channel’s on-air watermark has been noted to display only “FOX” within the logo, distinguishing it from other Fox Sports channels that display the full channel name.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Fox League was positioned at launch under the brand slogan “We’re a FOX sporting nation,”[2] with the channel’s launch campaign continuing this positioning under the theme that “everyone’s team deserves to be seen.”[7] The launch event at Birchgrove Oval was deliberately chosen to honour the origins of rugby league in Australia, with Fox Sports chief executive Patrick Delany noting the channel would celebrate the game’s heritage while delivering new innovations.[8]
