Photobucket is an American image hosting and cloud storage service founded in 2003 by Alex Welch and Darren Crystal with funding from Trinity Ventures.[1] The company was acquired by Fox Interactive Media in 2007, then sold in December 2009 to Seattle-based mobile imaging startup Ontela, which renamed itself Photobucket Inc.[1] The platform is now headquartered in Denver, Colorado.[2]
Design and History
Photobucket’s visual identity has undergone several redesigns since its founding. A trademark registration from 2013 describes a mark consisting of “an image of a stylized camera with the term ‘PHOTOBUCKET’ to its right.”[3] This version relied on a physical representation of a camera as its primary icon.
In a later rebrand, the design team moved away from that literal camera depiction. According to WJY Studios, which worked on the project, the new identity was designed to be “more modern, playful, and visually appealing.” The studio created a new logo that “incorporated a camera lens with a clean font that contemporized the brand.”[4] The team explained that they wanted to move away from a physical representation of a camera and instead offer “a nod to the idea of a camera lens.”[4]
The rebrand came as Photobucket worked to rebuild trust with users. In 2019, CEO Ted Leonard described how the company rebranded to “unbreak the internet” and gain consumer trust, noting that in a digital world where relationships are virtual, consumers can easily switch to another company.[5] That same year, Photobucket launched a newly enhanced website under new leadership as part of its effort to serve digital content owners.[6]
Typography and Design
For the wordmark in the rebranded identity, WJY Studios chose a geometric sans-serif typeface called Outfit to give the brand “a modern and clean feel.”[4] The current logo pairs this wordmark with a camera lens-inspired icon, replacing the earlier stylized camera illustration documented in the 2013 trademark filing.[3]
