DIRECTV is an American satellite and streaming television provider that has used several distinct visual identities since its launch in the mid-1990s. Its most recognizable mark, the “cyclone D,” was introduced in 1993 and remained a core part of the brand for over two decades. In 2021, after separating from AT&T to become a standalone video company, DIRECTV unveiled a refreshed logo designed by the creative agency Compadre.
Design and History
DIRECTV introduced its iconic “D” logo in 1993. The mark combined a stylized letter D with a white cyclone-like swirl, a design that would define the brand for years. A Canadian court decision from 1996 described the logo as “a white-on-black cyclone design.”[1] The cyclone motif was a deliberate visual pun: the white negative space within the D was meant to evoke a cyclone, a powerful force that comes from the sky, echoing the satellite delivery model.[2]
In 2015, following AT&T’s acquisition of DIRECTV, the company moved away from the cyclone mark. The new branding paired the existing DIRECTV wordmark with AT&T’s globe logo.[3] This change was part of a broader effort to align DIRECTV with its new parent company’s visual identity.
When DIRECTV became a standalone company again in August 2021, it introduced a new logo and corporate branding scheme across all its services.[4] The company worked with creative marketing agency Compadre to refresh the logo, aiming to celebrate DIRECTV’s brand heritage while creating a more cohesive brand across its satellite TV product, app, and streaming service.[5] Compadre built a new family of logos representing the “beam it” (satellite) or “stream it” choices available to DIRECTV customers.[6]
Art director Seton Kim, who worked on the project at Compadre, explained the design approach: “My solution was to use the arc of the D, from logos past, as a visual through line that would point to the brand’s future. Having the arc cut through the typography maintained the brand’s dual color way.”[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2021 logo is a wordmark-only design. According to the trademark filing, the mark consists of “DIRECTV” in a stylized font with the letters “DIREC” divided horizontally by a tapered arc of negative space sweeping upward from the lower left corner. The upper parts of the letters “DIREC” are in white and the lower parts in blue.[8] The arc is a direct reference to the curve of the D from the earlier cyclone logo, serving as a visual link between the brand’s past and its future.[7]
The trademark application for the wordmark claims black and blue as features of the mark.[9] A separate trademark filing for the stylized letter D icon also claims black and blue as color features.[10]
Typography and Design
The 2021 DIRECTV wordmark uses a stylized sans-serif typeface. The trademark filing describes it simply as “DIRECTV in a stylized font.”[9] The design creates separation between the words “Direct” and “TV” through the arc cutting through the typography.[7] The logo was designed to work across all viewing platforms, including the traditional satellite TV product, the app, and the streaming service.[5]
