RDS2 is a Canadian French-language sports specialty channel that serves as the secondary feed of Réseau des sports (RDS), the leading French-language sports broadcaster in Canada. The channel is part of Bell Media’s RDS multiplatform offering, which also includes RDS Info, the RDS.ca website and the RDS application.[1] RDS2 launched on October 7, 2011, timed to coincide with the start of the 2011 MLB post-season.[2]
Design and History
RDS2 was announced by Bell Media on June 15, 2011, as a multiplex channel of RDS, similar to the English-language TSN2 service.[2] The channel was created to provide additional sports programming capacity beyond what the main RDS channel could carry.
The RDS2 logo is a direct extension of the parent RDS brand identity. A logo file hosted on Wikimedia Commons, described as a logo for RDS2 HD, shows the mark in a horizontal format.[3] The visual identity follows the established RDS wordmark system, with the numeral “2” appended to distinguish the secondary feed from the primary channel. The channel’s launch slogan, “Le terrain de jeu s’agrandit” (“The playing field is growing”), reflected its role in expanding RDS’s sports coverage.[4]
RDS2 is owned by CTV Specialty Television Inc., a joint venture of Bell Media (80 percent) and ESPN (20 percent).[2] The channel broadcasts in 1080i high definition, with the standard-definition feed downscaled to letterboxed 480i.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
As a secondary feed of RDS, the RDS2 logo does not carry independent symbolism. Its identity is derived from the parent RDS brand, which Bell Media describes as the leader in French-language sports broadcasting in Canada.[1] The “2” in the logo functions as a practical designation, identifying the channel as the second feed within the RDS family of services.
