CGTN Africa is the African division of China Global Television Network (CGTN), the English-language news channel operated by Chinese state broadcaster China Central Television (CCTV). Based in Nairobi, Kenya, it manages bureaux across the continent. The channel launched on January 11, 2012, as CCTV Africa, and was renamed CGTN Africa on December 31, 2016, when its parent network rebranded from CCTV News to CGTN. [1]
Design and History
The CGTN Africa logo is a typographic wordmark that follows the visual system introduced when CCTV News was renamed CGTN (China Global Television Networks) on December 31, 2016. The rebrand accompanied a new logo and studio design across the network’s six language-specific channels, including CGTN Africa, CGTN Arabic, CGTN America, CGTN Spanish, CGTN Russian, and CGTN French. [2]
The new CGTN wordmark was based on the Syntax Series typeface, with modifications. The color scheme carried over the gold tone that had been introduced in 2014, when CCTV News launched an English-language short-video mobile app whose icon first used the gold logo. Following that introduction, platforms other than the on-air channel identifier gradually adopted the new gold palette. [2]
As part of the broader CGTN launch, the new channel logos were rolled out across social media platforms including Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Instagram, and Tumblr. [2]
Typography and Design
The CGTN wordmark lettering is derived from the Syntax Series typeface, a humanist sans-serif family, with custom modifications applied for the network identity. The gold color used in the logo was first adopted in 2014 for the CCTV News mobile application icon before being extended to the broader CGTN brand system. [2]
