TVP Polonia is the international television channel of Telewizja Polska (TVP), Poland’s public broadcaster, aimed primarily at the Polish diaspora abroad. Its visual identity has evolved through two major phases, both tied to broader corporate rebranding efforts across the entire TVP network.
Design and History
TVP Polonia began broadcasting on 31 March 1993 as the third TVP channel after TVP1 and TVP2, initially operating as the Satellite Program TVP Polonia.[1]
On 7 March 2003, TVP introduced a new, unified visual identity across the corporation and all its channels. The work was commissioned to Grupa A5, a Gdańsk-based branding firm, which designed, produced and developed the implementation rules for the new identity.[2] The goal was to emphasize that Telewizja Polska operates as a single organization, replacing the many independent marks previously used by different programs and regional centers.[3]
The corporate mark was based on the existing TVP1 sign, modified in proportions and lettering. Each channel used the same unified sign but differed in color and, in the case of TVP Polonia, in the name. TVP Polonia was assigned a white-and-red color scheme, while TVP1 received white-and-blue, TVP2 white-and-orange, and TVP3 white-and-green.[2] On television screens, all channel signs appeared in an achromatic white-and-black version.[2]
In 2020, TVP Polonia adopted a new visual identity. The word “POLONIA” was enlarged and detached from the box containing the TVP letters, a change that first appeared on the channel’s website in 2019 and launched on air in February 2020.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The 2003 unified identity was designed to signal that all TVP channels belong to one broadcaster. According to TVP’s spokesman at the time, the previous use of many independent signs across different programs and regional centers was unclear and failed to communicate that they were part of a single institution.[3] The white-and-red palette assigned to TVP Polonia distinguishes the channel from its sister stations within the shared corporate framework.[2]
