YouTube Shorts is the short-form vertical video experience within the YouTube platform, announced in September 2020 with an early beta launch in India.[1] Its visual identity is anchored by a dedicated logo mark that adapts YouTube’s familiar play button into a vertical, red-and-white symbol distinct from the parent brand’s standard horizontal icon.
Design and History
The YouTube Shorts logo was introduced alongside the product’s announcement in 2020.[1] An early iteration of the icon, described as the familiar YouTube play button in white atop a red squiggle, was spotted in testing within the Android app in October 2020, appearing on the Shorts Shelf discovery carousel on the YouTube homepage.[2][3]
The design was led by Aaron La Lau, who served as Design Lead for YouTube Shorts and was responsible for leading the design of the new mark. Working with YouTube’s in-house Art Department and marketing teams, the team developed the symbol into a scalable identity system.[4] Visual designer ChingFa Lung also contributed to the logo design, refining the Shorts logo to align with YouTube’s brand grid system and optimizing pixel ratios for integration across the YouTube product family.[5]
In January 2026, YouTube introduced a global visual identity refresh developed internally by YouTube Creative Studio, intended to unify its sub-brands including Shorts, Music, TV, Premium and Kids under a more cohesive visual language.[6][7] The refresh retained YouTube’s red, white and black palette and the play bar UI elements, while introducing a new motion identity and proprietary display typeface.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The YouTube Shorts logo’s design is rooted in the foundational structure of the broader YouTube app icon family. Beyond a literal representation of an “S” for “Shorts,” the symbol was intentionally crafted to evoke creativity, speed, energy, forward momentum and playful innovation.[4] The mark combines a stylized “S” shape with YouTube’s play button symbol within a red background, a design that was also reflected in Google’s trademark application for YouTube Shorts.[8]
Typography and Design
As part of the 2026 global identity refresh, YouTube introduced a new proprietary display typeface called YouTube Display, developed in collaboration with Sharp Type and based on the geometry of the YouTube logo. The typeface supports nine global writing systems.[6][7] The refresh also introduced YouTube’s first official motion identity, designed to react to real content and culture rather than remaining static.[6]
