YouTube Go

YouTube Go was a lightweight Android app for viewers in regions with slow connections, expensive data, or entry-level devices. Design studio Hello Monday created a new comet-style app icon, replacing the original rocket symbol from the 2016 launch.

YouTube Go was a lightweight Android app built for viewers in regions with slow connections, expensive data, or entry-level devices. Announced on the official YouTube blog in September 2016 as “a new YouTube app built from scratch,” it launched first in India before expanding to other markets.[1] The app was discontinued in August 2022, with YouTube directing users to the main YouTube application.[2]

Design and History

YouTube Go’s visual identity went through two distinct phases. The original app icon, used from the 2016 launch through the beta rollout in India in early 2017, was a rocket symbol.[3]

Design studio Hello Monday was later tasked with creating a new app icon for YouTube Go, replacing the existing rocket “which no longer felt rooted enough in the broader YouTube Go story and positioning.”[4] The studio’s concept was a shape resembling a fast “comet,” described as “a simple take on this iconic shape, a circle with hints of speed.”[4] Hello Monday’s deliverables for the project included concept, design, and animation.[4]

In February 2018, YouTube expanded YouTube Go to more than 130 countries, with the app described as a redesigned version of the official YouTube app for areas with poor connectivity and costly mobile data.[5] The comet-style icon introduced by Hello Monday accompanied this broader rollout period.

Meaning and Symbolism

Hello Monday framed the YouTube Go identity around accessibility: the studio noted that for people with limited internet access, barriers prevented them from experiencing YouTube’s mission of giving everyone a voice and showing them the world. YouTube Go was positioned as a catalyst for conversation, connection, and shared moments for those users.[4] The comet concept was intended to capture the core benefits and brand attributes of YouTube Go in a universally recognizable form.[4]
