ESLint is a widely used open-source static code analysis tool for JavaScript, created by Nicholas C. Zakas. Its visual identity centers on a distinctive hexagonal logomark that has become recognizable across developer tools, IDEs, and conference materials.
Design and History
The current ESLint logomark was designed in 2016 by Ömer Balyalı, who responded to a public call from ESLint creator Nicholas C. Zakas for non-code contributions to the project. The brief, posted in GitHub issue #5083, asked for an evolution of the existing logo rather than a complete redesign, with a preference for purple shades and typography suitable for stickers, t-shirts, and the website. Balyalı’s first draft proposal, refined with minor tweaks, became the final logo through a fully public process documented in GitHub issue #5085. He later signed ownership transfer documents to the jQuery Foundation (now OpenJS Foundation), which registered the mark as an official trademark. [1] [2]
In 2022, ESLint underwent a broader brand refresh led by designer Hayden Bleasel and his agency Jellypepper. The team kept the existing icon due to its widespread usage across websites, IDEs, and platforms, but refined it to be more modern and flexible. The refresh combined the icon with a new wordmark using the Space Grotesk typeface. [3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logomark’s hexagonal form is composed of six interlocking L-shaped segments, a reference to “Lint,” the core function of the tool. The design rationale, documented in the original GitHub discussion, notes that the different parts of the code fit together so perfectly that they create a unified hexagon or cube form, with the six parts representing the six letters of “ESLint.” [4]
The primary brand color is purple, specifically #4b32c3, a value confirmed by the typescript-eslint project’s branding documentation, which describes its own color as the halfway point between ESLint’s #4b32c3 purple and TypeScript’s #007acc blue. [5]
Typography and Design
The 2022 brand refresh introduced Space Grotesk as ESLint’s primary typeface. According to the redesign announcement, the font was chosen for its balance of character with technical geometric elements that reflect a developer-centric identity. Space Grotesk was paired with its sister font, Space Mono, which was developed for editorial use in headline and display typography. [3]
The official branding guidelines note that the ESLint logomark can be used in isolation without the wordmark, though using both together is preferred where possible. The logo is designed to work on various brand colors, with opacity used on non-white backgrounds to emulate lighter shades. [6]
