Surfshark is a VPN and online privacy company operated by Surfshark B.V., registered in Amsterdam. It launched its first product, Surfshark VPN, in 2018 and has since grown into a suite of consumer security tools, including antivirus, private search, data-leak alerts and the data-removal service Incogni.[1]
Company History
Surfshark was founded in 2018 by Vytautas Kaziukonis, who remains chairman of the board. Besides its registered office in the Netherlands, the company lists offices in Vilnius and Kaunas in Lithuania, as well as in Warsaw and Berlin.[1] It was first registered in the British Virgin Islands and moved its headquarters to the Netherlands on 1 October 2021.[2]
In early 2022, Surfshark completed a merger with Nord Security, the company behind NordVPN. Nord Security became the parent of both brands, but the two VPN services continue to run as separate products with their own apps, servers and privacy policies.[3] Surfshark says it now has more than 500 employees and over 40 million app downloads.[1]
Like other leading VPN providers such as ExpressVPN, Surfshark relies on outside audits to support its privacy claims. Its no-logs policy was checked by Deloitte at the end of 2022 and again in 2025.[2]
Design and History
The Surfshark identity combines a compact symbol with the brand name in a clean sans-serif. The symbol is a stylised “S” whose curves suggest both a wave and a shark’s fin, so the letter and the name read as a single idea. The palette is built on a bright teal-cyan, deep navy and white.
Surfshark has not published who designed the logo or whether it has changed since the 2018 launch, and we found no reliable record of either. Logo Index therefore does not list a designer or a redesign history for this mark.
Meaning and Symbolism
The name joins two images: surfing, as in surfing the web, and the shark, a strong and fast predator. Together they position the service as a way to move through the internet confidently and safely. The fin-and-wave form of the symbol puts both halves of the name into one shape.
Teal and navy are calm, cool colours that many security and privacy brands use to signal trust. Surfshark’s brighter cyan keeps the mark lively and links it to the sea, which helps it stand apart from the darker, more technical look common among VPN services. This reading is ours; Surfshark has not published an official explanation of the logo.
Typography and Design
The symbol is simple enough to work as an app icon on phones, computers, browser extensions and smart TVs, which is where most users see the brand. The rounded, friendly wordmark balances the “shark” in the name, so the identity reads as approachable consumer software rather than intimidating security tooling.
