Åtvidabergs FF, formally Åtvidabergs Fotbollförening, is a Swedish football club based in Åtvidaberg, Östergötland. The club was formed on 1 July 1907 as Åtvidabergs IF and adopted its present name before the 1935–1936 season, when the multi-sport club split into separate sections.[1] The club’s colours, reflected in its crest and kit, are blue and white.[1]
Design and History
The Åtvidabergs FF crest is built around the alchemical symbol for copper, a reference to the metal that was once mined in the region.[2] The club’s own match notes reinforce this industrial heritage, describing Åtvidabergs FF as a classic Swedish “brukslag” (mill town team) with copper in its club badge, just as Degerfors IF, founded the same year, carries iron in its mark.[3]
The copper symbol is so closely tied to the club that it has shaped the local sign language. The Swedish Sign Language lexicon notes that the sign for Åtvidaberg derives from the Åtvidabergs FF logo on the team shirts, which is the copper symbol; signers trace a circle over the left side of the chest with thumb and index finger together.[4]
The club’s connection to copper also extends to its home ground, Kopparvallen, a name adopted in 1936.[2] The club’s official fan club is called Kopparslagarna (the coppersmiths).[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest’s central device is the alchemical symbol for copper, chosen to reflect the historical copper mining in the Åtvidaberg area.[2] The club’s own communications confirm that the badge is meant to be worn and displayed with pride by supporters.[5]
