FC Dordrecht is a professional football club based in Dordrecht, Netherlands, competing in the Eerste Divisie. The club’s visual identity is built around a crest featuring a ram’s head, a symbol directly tied to the club’s nickname and local culture.
Design and History
The current FC Dordrecht identity dates to 2002, when the club returned to the name FC Dordrecht after a series of name changes. Supporters were invited to a presentation of the new name and new logo that year, marking the end of a period that had seen the club compete as DS’79, Dordrecht’90, and SVV/Dordrecht’90 since 1979.[1] The club had previously used the name FC Dordrecht from 1972 to 1979, when the professional branch separated from the amateur DFC Dordrecht.[2]
The club’s official colors are green and white. The home kit consists of a green shirt with white shorts and white socks, according to the club’s own information page.[3] These green and white colors have been a consistent part of the club’s identity in recent decades, with the recognizable green and white combination retained in kit designs through at least 2018.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest prominently features the head of a ram. This imagery is directly connected to the club’s nickname, “Schapenkoppen” (sheep heads), which supporters use for themselves.[5] The ram’s head is so central to the club’s identity that it has also appeared as a separate design element on the team’s kit, in addition to being part of the crest.[4]
The nickname and the ram symbol are rooted in local Dordrecht culture. The city is associated with the “schapenkop” (sheep head), a local butter cookie specialty, and supporters sing “Wij zijn de Dordtse schapenkoppen” (we are the Dordtse sheep heads) during matches.[6]
