The Modesto Nuts are a Minor League Baseball team of the California League and the Single-A affiliate of the Seattle Mariners, based in Modesto, California. The team adopted its current name in 2005 after its affiliation with the Oakland Athletics ended, choosing a nickname that reflects the several types of nuts grown in the region. The club’s primary logo, introduced with the rebrand, features two anthropomorphic nuts, an almond and a walnut, wearing baseball caps and holding equipment alongside the team name.
Design and History
The Modesto Nuts identity was born from a community rebranding effort in 2004 and 2005. After the then-Modesto Athletics switched affiliations to the Colorado Rockies, the team held a name-the-team contest, inviting fans to submit suggestions by email. A small group, including the team president, owner, a local marketing specialist, and designer Dan Simon of Studio Simon, narrowed hundreds of submissions to four finalists: Strike, Derailers, Steel, Dusters, and Nuts. The name “Nuts” won with 52 percent of roughly 3,000 fan votes. The Central Valley produces more than 80 percent of the world’s almonds, with walnuts also a major commodity in the area, making the name a direct nod to the region’s agricultural economy. [1] [2]
Dan Simon of Studio Simon designed the logo. Gorrasi, then the team’s general manager, recalled that Simon sent several concepts and that the two agreed on “Direction B.” Gorrasi vetoed a green cap option to cut ties with the Athletics’ color scheme. There was back-and-forth over how many characters to feature; Gorrasi pushed for three, but Simon convinced him that two would make a cleaner, more effective design. The original concept included a peanut, but it was replaced with an almond to better reflect the Central Valley. [3]
The primary logo has remained in use since its 2005 debut. The team’s mascots, Al the Almond and Wally the Walnut, appear in the logo and also roam the stands at John Thurman Field. [4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The logo’s details carry deliberate local references. At the 2005 press conference unveiling the new brand, Gorrasi explained that the red “M” on the mascots’ hats was a nod to the old Modesto Reds, a team that played in the city from 1946 to 1961, and that the arch in the logo mirrored the famous Modesto Arch downtown. The wordmark “NUTS” appears in red block letters outlined in light beige, with “Modesto” in white above it in an arch, echoing the downtown landmark. [3]
The name itself was chosen to steer the brand toward the region’s agricultural heritage. Gorrasi noted that when people heard “Nuts,” they filled in the blanks with their own associations, some positive and some negative, and the logo was designed to give the name the context it deserved by emphasizing the Central Valley’s nut-growing industry.
