Beşiktaş Jimnastik Kulübü, the Istanbul sports club commonly known as Beşiktaş JK or BJK, has used a shield-shaped crest in black and white since its early years. The club’s visual identity is built around the initials “BJK,” the founding date “1903,” and a Turkish flag, elements that have remained consistent through several documented refinements.
Design and History
According to the club’s official history, the first Beşiktaş pin was inspired by pins from a French school. The date “1906,” the year of the pin’s first issue, was written in Latin numerals. At the top, the word “Beşiktaş” appeared in Arabic script, with the letter “J” on the right and “K” on the left. The pin’s reverse side noted it was made in “Konstantinopolis” and bore the seal of the craftsman who produced it. The star on this early crest had six points, a form used until the Second Constitutional Monarchy in 1908. The original pin was later donated by İskender Yakak to honorary chairman Süleyman Seba.[1]
In May 2013, Beşiktaş’s general assembly approved adding an eagle symbol to the club’s official logos. The club explicitly stated this was not a logo change: the eagle emblem, which had long been used representationally, was formally added to the statutes alongside the existing crest.[2] Media coverage at the time described the move as placing an eagle figure over the old logo.[3]
In March 2025, during the club’s 122nd anniversary, Beşiktaş announced a renewal of its emblem. The club stated the updated crest was drawn on the same form as the previous emblem, with adjustments made to better reflect the club’s brand value and to improve clarity in digital and print applications. Specific changes included enlarging the Turkish flag, adjusting the flag’s red to match the official Turkish flag tone, thickening the black outer contour to match the white contour, and standardizing the “B,” “J,” and “K” letters to the same size and the “1,” “9,” “0,” and “3” numerals to the same thickness for typographic consistency.[4][5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s official history documents that the first pin’s design was directly inspired by the pins of a French school, with the “1906” date marking the year of its first issue.[1] The Turkish flag has been a consistent element of the crest, and the club’s 2025 announcement referred to it as a flag “we have proudly carried for 122 years.”[4] The eagle, formally recognized as an official club symbol in 2013, had been used representationally for a long period before that approval.[2]
Typography and Design
The 2025 emblem renewal included specific typographic adjustments. The club announced that the letters “B,” “J,” and “K” were made the same size, and the numerals “1,” “9,” “0,” and “3” were made the same thickness to achieve typographic integrity.[4] The same announcement noted that the emblem’s black outer contour was thickened to match the white contour, giving the crest a more distinct appearance.[5]
