The Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens are the athletic teams of the University of Delaware in Newark. The current primary athletics mark, in use since 2018, is a side-view of a blue hen’s head rendered in blue, gold, and white.[1] The university’s official athletics colors are Delaware Blue (PMS 2945 C) and Delaware Yellow-Gold (PMS 109 C).[2]
Design and History
The Blue Hens nickname traces to Delaware’s state bird, the Blue Hen chicken, a connection that has shaped the athletics identity for decades. The primary logo has undergone several distinct iterations since the 1930s.[1]
From 1987 through 1999, Delaware Athletics used a mark known as the Fightin’ Blue Hen D, often referred to as “Dick the Chicken,” as its primary logo.[3] Earlier versions of this design appeared on the football scoreboard during the 1960s and at center court for Delaware basketball during the 1970s.[3]
Between 2009 and 2018, the primary logo combined a blue hen’s head with interlocking “UD” letters.[4] In 2018, the department introduced the current primary mark, which features the hen’s head alone as a standalone emblem.[1]
In September 2026, Delaware Athletics announced a limited-edition throwback mark for the 2026-27 season, reviving the Fightin’ Blue Hen D design with bolder outlines and strokes in the university’s current blue and gold colors.[3] The winged stripes on the hen’s head in this refreshed version nod to Delaware’s gold winged helmets, while bandages across its nose represent the “fight” behind the Fightin’ Blue Hens name, derived from the original 1987 logo.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
The hen imagery directly references Delaware’s state bird, the Blue Hen chicken, which is the basis for the university’s athletic nickname.[3] In the 2026 throwback version, the bandages across the hen’s nose are an explicit visual reference to the fighting spirit associated with the “Fightin'” modifier in the team name.[3]
Typography and Design
The 2026 throwback mark’s accompanying “Fightin’ Blue Hens” typeface draws inspiration from lettering featured on Delaware uniforms during the 1987-1999 era when the original Fightin’ Blue Hen D served as the primary logo.[3]
