Ball State Cardinals is the athletic identity of Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. The program’s current primary mark is the Cardinal Head logo, an abstract depiction of the bird’s head in cardinal red, which has served as the official athletics logo since 1990. The university also maintains a separate institutional logo featuring the Beneficence statue, while the full-bodied “Dancing Charlie” cardinal figure remains a recognized alternate mark.
Design and History
Ball State has officially had only two athletics logos since 1926, when the school mascot officially became known as the Cardinals. The first, designed by former assistant sports information director Norm Harmeyer, was a full-bodied bird figure that many later called the “running chicken” logo. That mark, affectionately known as “Dancing Charlie,” served as the symbol of Ball State athletics from the mid-1960s until 1990, a period that included the program’s rise to Division I status in football.[1][2]
In 1989, following the success of the men’s basketball team the previous season, Ball State conducted a nationwide competition to find a new athletics logo. The university offered $5,000 to the designer of the most popular entry. The winning design, depicting a swooping cardinal head, was created by William Villarreal, a 1977 Ball State graduate. The new logo was unveiled at a ceremony on November 27, 1989, with Villarreal present as the logo artist and designer.[1][3] The Cardinal Head logo was introduced as Ball State’s official athletics logo in 1990.[2]
In 2015, the university made minor changes to refresh the Charlie Cardinal logo. The three tails atop the cardinal head, described variously as feathers, “whoosh” marks, or black streaks, were removed, and the red was deepened. New athletic director Mark Sandy had a hand in the update, including dropping the black streaks from atop the cardinal head. The changes made the cardinal head itself larger without the lines.[4][5]
While the Cardinal Head logo remains the official athletics mark, the full-bodied Dancing Charlie logo was placed at midfield on the Scheumann Stadium turf for the 2023 football season. Ball State’s athletics department noted that Dancing Charlie is not the official representation of Ball State Athletics, although it is recognized as the primary logo on each of the team’s black and white football helmets, where it debuted as an alternate logo on December 5, 2020.[2][6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Villarreal said his winning 1989 design displayed “an attitude of strength,” describing the intent behind the swooping cardinal head mark.[7] The cardinal bird itself connects to the university’s mascot, which has been known as the Cardinals since 1926.[1]
Typography and Design
