The Hampton Pirates and Lady Pirates are the athletic teams of Hampton University in Hampton, Virginia, competing in NCAA Division I athletics. The program’s visual identity has evolved through several distinct logo generations since the late 1970s, each built around the pirate theme that gives the teams their nickname.
Design and History
The earliest documented Hampton Pirates primary logo dates to 1979. That emblem featured a pirate head with a blue hat, black skull and crossbones, and a knife or dagger held in the mouth. The design was hand-drawn in appearance, with an uneven circular frame that gave it a sketch-like quality.[1]
In 1997, the program introduced a more polished primary mark depicting a smiling pirate, though the design retained a somewhat cartoonish character. A more substantial update followed in 2002, when the team adopted an emblem featuring a pirate’s torso above the program name, with a prominent hat and sword.[2]
A revised version of that torso emblem appeared around 2007, closely resembling its 2002 predecessor but with an updated color palette.[2] A secondary logo used from 2002 to 2012 showed a more geometric rendering of a pirate’s upper body with a tricorn hat, bandana, eye patch, earring, and sword, rendered in two shades of blue with gold accents.[3]
In 2025, the Pirates introduced a new primary identity featuring two crossed sabers in blue with white highlights.[4] The saber mark also appeared as an alternate logo in the same year.[5]
Beyond the primary marks, the basketball program has used an emblem with interlocking “H” and “U” letters.[2] A staggered serif “HU” alternate logo in blue with a white outline and blue drop shadow appeared on football helmets from 2006 through 2022.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
Across its various generations, the Hampton Pirates identity has consistently preserved the pirate theme introduced with the 1979 emblem.[2] The 2025 saber mark continues that nautical and seafaring motif through the crossed-sword imagery associated with pirate iconography.[4]
Typography and Design
The program’s official colors are blue and white. The blue is specified as Pantone 2384 C with hex color #0060A9, and white is Pantone P 1-1 C with hex color #FFFFFF.[2]
