Gamba Osaka is a professional football club based in Suita, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, competing in the J1 League. The club was founded in 1980 as the Matsushita Electric Industrial (Panasonic) soccer team and was renamed Gamba Osaka in 1992, joining the J.League in its inaugural 1993 season.[1] The name “Gamba” derives from the Italian word for “leg,” while its sound also echoes the Japanese word “ganbaru” (to do one’s best).[1]
Design and History
Gamba Osaka’s current emblem was introduced in October 2021, announced before a home match commemorating the club’s 30th anniversary, and adopted for use starting with the 2022 season.[2] The new emblem replaced a design that had been in use since 1991.[2]
The current emblem forms the club’s initial “G” using three elements: a flame, a heart, and a goal.[3] The club described the design as “extremely simple and solid,” created to express its ambition to become Japan’s leading sports experience brand beyond the football field.[4] The emblem retains the club’s traditional blue and black color scheme while pushing the “G” letterform to the forefront in a simplified design.[5]
The rebranding project was developed in partnership with Interbrand Japan and Panasonic Corporation’s sports management office.[6] The branding work received a Distinction award at the REBRAND 100 Global Awards 2024.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club has documented specific meanings for each element of the emblem. The flame shape rising from the bottom symbolizes Gamba Osaka as a blue flame that generates enthusiasm.[7] The blue line forming a heart shape in the center represents the club’s will to become the center of fans, supporters, the local community, and Japan’s sports culture through passion that continues to burn in the heart.[7] The goal shape depicted at the top expresses a strong determination to continue sincerely challenging toward glory (goal).[7]
The rebrand’s core theme is “BE THE HEAT, BE THE HEART,” reflecting the club’s aim to become a blue flame that burns with passion and creates new experiences for people.[8]
Typography and Design
The visual system accompanying the new emblem uses an original font with bold typography, described by the club’s branding partners as simple yet powerful.[6] The club’s official colors are blue and black.[1]
