Club Baloncesto Gran Canaria, the professional basketball club based in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Spain, competes in the Liga ACB under the commercial name Dreamland Gran Canaria. The club was founded in 1963 within the Claret School and for many years played under that denomination.[1] Its traditional team colors are yellow and blue.[2]
Design and History
The club’s logo is built around the silhouette of the island of Gran Canaria, a motif that has become central to its visual identity. In September 2014, club president Joaquín Costa presented to the board of directors a fusion between the club’s logotype and the silhouette of the island, intended for display in the center circle of the Gran Canaria Arena during official competitions.[3] The following year, the club’s official website confirmed that the logo integrated with the island silhouette was in use on match shirts.[4]
In March 2013, the club presented a special logo to mark its 50th anniversary (1963-2013). Marian Rodríguez, the club’s marketing director, stated that the most important aspect of the design was that it “had the identity of the club” and that it should “evoke” what the club means to its supporters.[5]
The island motif extends beyond the crest itself. In the 2015-16 season, the club’s match shirts incorporated the coat of arms of the city of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria as a watermark across the full jersey, alongside the club logo with the island silhouette, the silhouette of the Canary Island dog on the shorts, and the Canary Island palm tree on the sides of the shirts.[6] These elements were chosen to evoke the idea of Gran Canaria and the Canary Islands.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The club’s visual identity is closely tied to the island it represents. The logo incorporates the silhouette of Gran Canaria itself, making the geographic identity of the club the central element of the crest.[3] The traditional yellow and blue colors have been described by the club as its traditional colors, with yellow used for the first kit and blue for the second.[4]
In recent seasons, the club has extended its island-inspired identity into its kits. For the 2025-26 season, the club collaborated with the agency 22 Grados on jerseys featuring pintaderas, geometric clay seals used by the ancient inhabitants of Gran Canaria for marking granaries, body decoration, and family identification. The pintaderas appear on both the yellow and blue shirts, playing with a combination of the colors of the Canary Islands flag.[7]
