The Grand Rapids Gold is the NBA G League affiliate of the Denver Nuggets, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan. The team adopted the Gold name and a new visual identity on July 7, 2021, when it rebranded from the Grand Rapids Drive following the announcement of its affiliation with the Nuggets earlier that year.[1]
Design and History
The Grand Rapids Gold identity was created through a collaborative process involving the Denver Nuggets, the NBA, and the Grand Rapids organization, according to a team statement announcing the rebrand.[2] No individual designer or agency has been publicly credited for the work.
The primary logo consists of the words “GRAND RAPIDS” over the word “GOLD,” with a stylized basketball design serving as the letter “O,” all enclosed within a rectangle, according to the trademark registration filed by the Denver Nuggets Limited Partnership.[3] The basketball-as-“O” element incorporates the design of the Nuggets’ alternate “Mile High City Basketball” logo.[4]
The team’s new primary and secondary logos each include a small river within every “R” to honor Grand Rapids’ nickname, River City.[1] An alternate logo features a basketball in the team’s color scheme with the city initials “GR” in white, with a river formed in the space on the lower half of the “R.”[5]
The franchise traces its roots to 2006, when it was founded as the Anaheim Arsenal. The team moved to Grand Rapids in 2014 after being purchased by SSJ Group.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Grand Rapids Gold name celebrates Colorado’s world-class mining heritage, connecting the team to its parent club, the Denver Nuggets.[1] The colors incorporated in the identity are those used by the Denver Nuggets since 2018.[1] The team replaced its previous blue and red colors with Denver’s midnight blue, sunshine yellow, and Flatirons red.[6]
The river motif within each “R” provides a local Grand Rapids reference, honoring the city’s identity as “River City” while the name and color palette tie the franchise to its Denver parent organization.[1]
Typography and Design
The primary logo places “GRAND RAPIDS” above “GOLD” in a stacked wordmark arrangement within a rectangular container.[3] The stylized basketball replacing the “O” in “GOLD” is the central graphic element, rendered in the Nuggets’ color scheme of navy blue, gold, and burgundy.[4]
Home jerseys are navy with yellow lettering and burgundy trim, while away jerseys are white with blue numbers, yellow lettering, and burgundy trim.[7]
