Málaga Club de Fútbol, commonly known as Málaga CF, is a Spanish football club based in Málaga, Andalusia. The club was named under its current denomination on 29 June 1994, following a history that includes several predecessor clubs dating back to 1904, including CD Málaga and Atlético Malagueño.[1]
Design and History
The current Málaga CF crest was created in 2003, although the club established its own emblem in 1994 when the current entity was consolidated. The 2003 design maintained the same aesthetic and symbolism that had been present since 1994, with a pointed shield shape featuring the city of Málaga and the team’s colors as its principal elements.[2]
The crest is divided into two parts and covered with a gold border. The upper section is a tribute to the city of Málaga, resembling the official city coat of arms. It depicts Málaga reflected over the bay, represented by the Castle of Gibralfaro on high, along with villas and a port. The lower section reflects the team, with a blue background crossed by five vertical white bars, referencing the club’s characteristic blue and white colors. A ribbon crosses this section, featuring a football in the middle and the club’s name, indicating it is a sports team.[2]
In June 2012, the club considered evolving the crest to increase the historical representation of all its former denominations. However, after significant fan opposition, Málaga CF announced that the crest would not undergo any change for the 2012/13 season, stating that the club never intended to undermine the identification of its supporters with the emblem that had represented them since 1994.[3]
Meaning and Symbolism
In the upper central area of the crest, the letters “TM” appear. These refer to “Tanto Monta,” a personal motto of Ferdinand the Catholic that was granted to the city of Málaga after its reconquest.[2] The motto is also inscribed inside the collar of the club’s 2025/26 away kit, described by the club as a nod to the cultural and historical heritage that has shaped the character of Málaga and its people.[4]
The blue and white colors of the crest are intrinsically linked to Malaguismo and Malagueñismo, the club’s identity and the city’s identity respectively.[5]
In March 2024, to celebrate 120 years of football in Málaga, the club designed a special anniversary logo. Described as a synthesis of the emblems of the city’s first team, it was framed in one of the most recognizable silhouettes of CD Málaga, featuring the representation of Gibralfaro and the blue and white colors, along with the four shades of blue most used by Malaguismo.[6]
