The J2 League is the second tier of Japanese professional football, operated by the Japan Professional Football League (J.League). Its visual identity is managed centrally by J.League, which designs and releases the official league title marks for J1, J2 and J3 together as a coordinated set.
Design and History
In December 2018, J.League announced that it would change its competition title marks starting with the 2019 season, coinciding with a renewed title partnership with Meiji Yasuda Life Insurance. The new marks were presented as a set covering the overall J.League plus the J1, J2 and J3 divisions. The J2 mark was described as a shield-shaped design that was simpler and easier to distinguish than the previous logo used since 2015.[1][2]
At the contract renewal press conference, J.League chairman Mitsuru Murai explained that the new title marks placed Meiji Yasuda Life and J.League within a single design to emphasize a sense of unity between the two organizations.[3]
In June 2026, J.League announced another redesign of the J1, J2 and J3 logos, to take effect from the 2026/27 season. The new marks retain the J.League symbol mark but simplify the layout to combine it with each division’s number and league name. The redesign was part of a “brand evolution” initiative tied to the league’s shift to an August-start season schedule.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
From 2019 through the 2025 season, the J2 League logo used green as its category color. This green was one of the J.League base colors (red, green and black) adopted when Meiji Yasuda Life became title partner. In 2022, when the title partnership was renewed, J.League gave the J2 color an explicit branding concept: “the green of a tree growing toward the sun.”[5]
The 2026 redesign abandons the division colors entirely. The new logos use black and white as their base, with the only red being the element already inside the J.League symbol mark. J.League stated that the league itself should not assert its own color, so that the colors and individuality of each J.League club stand out most clearly. The black and white palette was described as reflecting a Japanese aesthetic of light and shadow, positioning the league as a foundation on which each club’s identity can shine.[4][6]
Typography and Design
J.League’s official explanation of the 2026 redesign states that the new marks were developed to improve the legibility of text elements and reproducibility across a wider range of media, responding to increased use in digital environments. The design carries forward the J.League symbol mark while enhancing category identification and readability for modern communication contexts.[4]
