Matsumoto Yamaga F.C. is a Japanese football club based in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, founded in 1965. The club’s current emblem, introduced for the 2011 season, is built around local identity, featuring motifs drawn from Matsumoto Castle, the Northern Alps, and the rock ptarmigan, the prefectural bird of Nagano.
Design and History
The club was founded in 1965 by players representing Nagano Prefecture, and took its name from a coffee shop near Matsumoto Station that the players frequented. The shop’s owner combined “yama” (mountain) and “yuga” (elegant) to create the name “Yamaga.” The original team emblem featured a coffee cup, reflecting this origin.[1]
In 2011, the club introduced a new emblem, replacing an earlier design that featured a shield with a crown and laurel leaves. The new crest uses a shield motif based on the chidori-hafu (cormorant-style gable) of Matsumoto Castle’s keep, and incorporates the rock ptarmigan.[2] The redesign was announced in late 2010, with the new emblem set to appear on the following season’s uniforms.[3]
The club’s official J.League profile describes the emblem’s composition: the three peaks at the top represent the Northern Alps centered on Mount Jonen, and the upper portion as a whole is a stylized depiction of Matsumoto Castle. Together, these two motifs express the identity of the home town of Matsumoto. Rock ptarmigans, the club’s nickname “Ptarmigans” and the prefectural bird, are placed on both sides.[4]
Meaning and Symbolism
The J.League profile confirms that the upper section of the emblem combines two local references: the three peaks symbolize the Northern Alps around Mount Jonen, and the overall upper shape is a stylized Matsumoto Castle.[4]
The rock ptarmigan appears on both sides of the emblem. The right-side ptarmigan holds a laurel branch in its beak, which has been described as expressing the club’s tradition and serving as a messenger of luck and victory.[5]
The lower portion of the emblem contains three green stripes representing the three mountain ranges of Shinshu (Hida, Kiso, and Akaishi), while four darker green sections represent the four plains mentioned in the Nagano prefectural song “Shinano no Kuni.”[5]
The text on the emblem reads “SHINSHU,” “MATSUMOTO YAMAGA F.C.,” and “SINCE 1965,” referencing the historical name of Nagano Prefecture, the club name, and the founding year.[5]
Typography and Design
The emblem’s shield shape is derived from the chidori-hafu gable of Matsumoto Castle’s keep, a distinctive architectural feature of the castle’s five-tier, six-story main tower.[2] The central shield features vertical stripes in alternating shades of green, with the castle-derived top section and the flanking ptarmigans completing the composition.[6]
The club’s official color is green, as listed in its J.League profile.[4]
