The Mumbai Indians are a franchise cricket team in the Indian Premier League (IPL), owned by Indiawin Sports Pvt. Ltd and based at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium.[1] The team’s visual identity has centered on the Sudarshan Chakra, a divine discus in Hindu mythology, since the franchise was unveiled in March 2008.
Design and History
The Mumbai Indians logo was unveiled on March 7, 2008, when Sachin Tendulkar was named captain of the Mukesh Ambani-owned franchise at a promotional event in Mumbai.[2] Contemporary reports described the artwork as based on the Sudarshan Chakra, with the team’s name engraved in it.[3] The Hindustan Times likewise noted the logo as “artwork based on the Sudarshan Chakra” at the same unveiling.[4]
The franchise’s own published philosophy, recorded in the official IPL 2009 coffee-table book, explains the choice of the Sudarshan Chakra: “The team logo draws its inspiration from the ‘sudarshan’ chakra. A ‘sudarshan’ chakra can be used in offence and defense… It is a divine weapon with limitless power of creation and destruction and is also the symbol of enlightenment.”[5]
The same source documents the reasoning behind the team color: “Our team color is Blue, which is the corporate color for Reliance Industries which owns the Mumbai Indians team. Mumbai is also associated with the sea which is blue.”[5] At the 2008 launch, ESPNcricinfo also reported that the team’s blue was the same as that of the Indian national side.[3]
Some secondary accounts claim the logo was redesigned around 2010, with the Chakra’s direction reversed and the palette brightened, but no official or primary source in the available research confirms a specific redesign date or rationale. The current mark, as shown on the franchise’s official IPL profile, retains the Sudarshan Chakra motif with the team name.[1]
Meaning and Symbolism
The Sudarshan Chakra is a sharp-edged, discus-like weapon associated with the Hindu deity Vishnu.[6] The franchise’s own explanation frames it as a divine weapon usable for both offense and defense, symbolizing enlightenment.[5] The blue color was chosen because it is the corporate color of Reliance Industries, the parent company of the franchise’s owner, and because Mumbai is associated with the blue sea.[5]
