Kamatamare Sanuki (カマタマーレ讃岐) is a Japanese football club based in Takamatsu and Marugame, with all of Kagawa Prefecture as its home territory. The club’s visual identity is built around a crest that directly references the region’s most famous food, kamatama udon, a dish of udon noodles topped with a raw egg.
Design and History
The club’s name and crest were announced together on October 23, 2005, at the Kagawa Prefectural Athletic Field in Takamatsu. The new name, which took effect from the 2006 season, was selected from 142 public submissions. The winning entry, by Chiaki Kume of Takamatsu, combined “kamatama” (from kamatama udon) with “mare,” the Italian word for sea. The crest was unveiled at the same event.[1][2]
The club’s official website confirms that the name has been used as the team name since the 2006 season.[2]
Meaning and Symbolism
The crest is built on a pattern of light blue and yellow stripes that represent waves. On top of the striped field sits a bowl of udon, with a soccer ball styled as an egg yolk placed at the center, echoing the appearance of a kamatama udon dish.[1][3]
The Japan Football Association’s official team profile for the club describes the emblem as featuring light blue and yellow stripes as its base, with a soccer ball in the center that evokes the egg yolk of the dish, placed over udon noodles.[3]
The club’s official identity also includes “sax blue” as a defining color. The club’s own communications refer to sax blue as the club’s identity color, and the 2024 J.League 10th anniversary logo was described as using 11 sax blue stripes, with the white stripes between them representing the club’s 10-year history.[4]
Typography and Design
For the 2024 J.League 10th anniversary logo, the club stated that the design follows the shape of the club emblem, while a “straightforward and sincere logotype” was used to express the character of Kagawa and Sanuki. The anniversary logo was created with creative art direction and design credited to an unnamed party on the club’s official announcement.[4]
