Major League Rugby (MLR) is a professional rugby union competition in North America, launched in 2018 with seven founding teams across the United States.[1] The league’s primary mark is a shield-shaped crest featuring the letters “MLR” above an outlined rugby ball.
Design and History
The Major League Rugby logo is a shield with two lines forming the border. Inside the top of the shield are the letters “MLR” above an outlined rugby ball divided by a curved line, with two ovals located longitudinally on the rugby ball on either side of the line.[2] The same design was registered as a trademark by the City of Glendale, Colorado, one of the league’s founding ownership groups, indicating the mark was in use during the league’s early formation.[3]
The league’s official sublicense policy refers to “the logo or shield of Major League Rugby” as a licensed asset, confirming the shield device as the league’s official emblem.[4] The league’s official website continues to display the shield crest as its primary identifier.[5]
Major League Rugby was announced in 2017 as a new professional competition set to begin play in April 2018.[1] The league’s founding teams were based in Austin, Houston, Glendale (Colorado), New Orleans, San Diego, Seattle and Salt Lake City (Utah).[1] A trademark application for the “MLR” word mark was filed on February 24, 2017, ahead of the league’s inaugural season.[6]
Meaning and Symbolism
The shield shape and rugby ball imagery in the MLR crest draw directly from the sport’s visual conventions. The trademark registration describes the mark’s elements without claiming specific colors, indicating the design’s core identity rests on the shield, the “MLR” lettering and the rugby ball motif.[2]
Typography and Design
The MLR crest uses the letters “MLR” in a bold, condensed arrangement within the shield’s upper portion.[2] The league’s trademark license agreement references “font requirements” in its standards for licensees, indicating the league maintains controlled typographic guidelines for its marks.[7]
