Modo Hockey, the Swedish ice hockey club based in Örnsköldsvik, traces its origins to 1921 when Alfredshems IK was formed. The club adopted the name Modo AIK in 1963, a reference to the Mo och Domsjö AB paper mill, and the hockey section became Modo HK, known as Modo Hockey, in 1987.[1]
Design and History
The most significant documented change to Modo Hockey’s club emblem came in April 2000, when Modo Paper became the club’s new main sponsor. The agreement included a new look for the club badge, with new typography and decoration in Modo Paper’s colors, while the club’s intense red remained as the base color.[2] The sponsorship also brought new jerseys in Modo Paper’s blue-green colors, again with some of the old red retained as a base.[3]
According to the joint press release from Modo Hockey and Modo Paper, the mark introduced in 2000 was designed as an open hand meant to symbolize that the club welcomes young, promising ice hockey players, with the club described as “Sweden’s best nursery.” The mark also featured an upward-pointing thumb symbolizing that the club plays offensive and positive hockey.[2]
In 2021, the company Hägglunds acquired the naming rights to the club’s arena, which became known as Hägglunds Arena.[4] The club’s official website currently refers to the venue as Hägglunds Arena.[5]
Meaning and Symbolism
The documented symbolism of the Modo Hockey emblem centers on the open hand design introduced in 2000. According to the official press release, the open hand represents the club’s welcoming of young, promising players, and the upward-pointing thumb signifies an offensive and positive style of hockey.[2] The club’s intense red color was retained as the base of the emblem even as the surrounding decoration adopted Modo Paper’s colors.[2]
