The Ogden Raptors are an independent baseball team in the Pioneer League, an MLB Partner League, based in Ogden, Utah. The team has used a dinosaur-themed visual identity since its founding in 1994, centered on the raptor mascot Oggie.
Design and History
The Raptors’ original logo was created in-house in 1993, modeled after a Utahraptor found at the George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden. That first mark depicted a teal raptor dinosaur with a baseball in the background and the team name in the foreground.[1][2]
In 2016, the team made its first logo change in franchise history. The new primary logo, designed by Jeremy Maxwell of New Era, featured an updated rendering of the raptor in green with a red tongue, running below the team name.[3][4] The redesign also introduced a new cap logo: a silver “O” with a velociraptor walking out of it, plus an alternate logo featuring a raptor talon emerging from within the “O.”[5][4]
Team president Dave Baggott explained the intent behind the update: “We didn’t want to completely change our identity. We wanted to keep the silver ‘O’ and wanted to keep it slanted a little bit to give it motion. Oggie’s on the run.”[4] The home cap remained all Dodger blue with a white button, reflecting the team’s affiliation at the time as a Los Angeles Dodgers Rookie-level affiliate.[4]
The Raptors joined the Pioneer League’s independent structure in 2021, when the league became an MLB Partner League.[6] The team continues to use the raptor identity developed in the 2016 rebrand.
Meaning and Symbolism
The team’s name and mascot draw directly from the Utahraptor, a dinosaur species whose fossils have been found in Utah. The original logo was modeled after a Utahraptor specimen displayed at the George S. Eccles Dinosaur Park in Ogden.[1]
The mascot Oggie, a cartoon green raptor, has been a fixture of the team’s identity since its early years. The 2016 logo update was framed around Oggie’s movement, with Baggott noting the mascot is “on the prowl” and “looking for something to hunt,” which he tied to the team’s pursuit of a championship.[4]
Typography and Design
The 2016 primary logo places the team name in bold lettering beneath the running raptor figure. The cap logo uses a slanted silver “O” with the raptor emerging from it, a design element the team deliberately preserved from earlier branding to maintain continuity.[4][5]
The team’s color scheme has historically centered on Dodger blue, reflecting its long affiliation with the Los Angeles Dodgers organization. The 2016 home cap was “all Dodger blue with a white button,” while the road cap was “Dodger blue with a gray visor and a white button on top.”[4]
