The Portland Pilots are the athletic teams of the University of Portland, a private Catholic university in Portland, Oregon. The school’s visual identity is built around a primary “P” mark and a secondary ship wheel and anchor logo, both developed in partnership with Nike.

Design and History

The University of Portland adopted the “Pilots” nickname in 1935, replacing an earlier identity tied to the school’s former name, Columbia University. The pilot theme connected to the campus’s location overlooking the Willamette River and the region’s history of riverboat navigation, where pilots guide vessels through the Columbia and Willamette Rivers. The pilot’s wheel became the logical logo for the athletic teams at that time.[1]

In 2006, Nike created a new logo system for University of Portland Athletics, centered on a stylized “P” mark. The design draws inspiration from the campus’s location on a bluff overlooking the Willamette River: the right side of the symbol represents “The Bluff,” the left side represents the city of Portland, and the river flows through the middle.[2]

On October 24, 2014, the University and Nike unveiled a new secondary logo featuring a ship wheel and anchor as part of a brand refresh. The “P” logo remained the primary mark for Pilot Athletics, while the new ship wheel logo was designed to enhance the existing logo system. The secondary logo was created by the Nike Graphic Identity Group in cooperation with the University.[3]

The 2014 refresh also included minor updates to the primary “P” logo, notably a more slender outline on two-color applications. The school added black, grey and silver as secondary colors, removed gold from the style guide, and overhauled the athletics brand style guide to reflect the changes.[2]

Meaning and Symbolism

The secondary ship wheel logo combines two nautical elements. The ship wheel, navigated by the pilot, is described by the University as a nautical symbol of direction and guidance that leads vessels to safe waters. The anchor is described as a symbol of both hope and steadfastness.[2]

The logo also recognizes the University’s relationship with the neighboring Columbia and Willamette Rivers and the region’s history with riverboat navigation. It brings a modernized version of the ship wheel logo that has been a prevalent part of the University’s athletics history, a concept identified through campus and constituent interviews during the design process.[2]

Purple and white are the official primary colors of the University of Portland. These school colors originated in the late 19th century when students attending the short-lived Methodist college called Portland University were known as the Webfoots or Portlands.[2] The official purple is specified as Pantone 275 C/U with hex code 1E1656.[4]

Typography and Design

The 2014 brand refresh standardized the Portland, Portland Pilots and Pilots wordmarks. The custom letterforms fuse modern and traditional styles, and a complete numeral set was designed to complement them. The letterforms contain subtle design features that reference the “P” logo and reiterate the flow of the river and the campus on “The Bluff.”[2]
