Rajasthan Royals is an Indian Premier League (IPL) franchise based in Jaipur, Rajasthan. The team’s visual identity has undergone two documented redesigns since the franchise’s founding in 2008, shifting from a blue and gold crest to the current pink-based mark introduced in 2019.
Design and History
The original Rajasthan Royals logo was designed by O&M Mumbai for the team’s debut season in 2008. It featured a blue and gold color scheme with two golden rampant lions blowing horns, known as “lion buglers,” flanking a central RR monogram with a crown on top and the team name in gold lettering. The team’s mascot, a lion named Moochu Singh, was also present on either side of the logo.[1][2]
In January 2009, the franchise introduced a revised logo ahead of the second IPL season. The changes were effected by an internal team rather than an external agency. The updated crest made the lion buglers more prominent, enlarged the central RR symbol, and made the overall crest more circular. The amount of gold was reduced, making blue the primary color, with only the two Rs, team name, and mascot retained in gold.[3][1][2]
The most significant redesign came in 2019. The franchise announced an updated brand identity with pink as its new official color, unveiled on Star Sports in an exclusive show called “Halla Bol 2019.” The decision followed a huge response from fans the previous season, when the Royals had worn a pink jersey for one match to raise cancer awareness. The franchise also cited the deep-rooted link between the color and the state of Rajasthan: Jaipur is known as the Pink City, Jodhpur is famous for pink sandstone, and Udaipur produces pink marble.[4][5][6]
According to the franchise’s official website, the logo was redesigned in 2019 after valuable feedback from fans on elements that needed strengthening. The redesign emphasized the franchise’s strategic intent to listen and engage with its supporters.[7]
Meaning and Symbolism
The franchise states that royalty and team spirit form the core values of the Royals’ logo, which was designed to evoke pride and grandeur. The lion buglers celebrate the large RR symbol that occupies the central area of the logo, and the mark epitomizes revelry, respect, and pride.[7]
The current pink logo features two “R”s depicted in straight and laterally reversed forms, adding symmetry and grace to the mark.[8]
The franchise also maintains a “boundless” version of the logo, termed the Royal Crest. Freed from the confines of the oval and the lions, this monotone crest is a special rendition created for modern visual communications, intended for use on apparel and other creative applications.[7]
